DETAILED DIRECTIONS FROM SYDNEY.

We give you a few more directions and some of the things to see and do while you are travelling north from Sydney .you can get a copy of the best Sydney to Brisbane map from the NRMA Head Office which is centrally located in Sydney at 388 George Street Sydney. This is located on the corner of King and George Streets - alternatively you can get the map from any of the thirty eight (38) conveniently located Sydney suburban branch offices and the addresses of these are listed in the Sydney telephone directory.

Things to do & places to see on what we call The Great Pacific Drive.

If you hired a car thru us, your car hire people will give you directions to get you onto the Harbour Bridge. It’s worthwhile parking the car and walking across the bridge. A footpath over the harbour is on the eastern side of the bridge and if the day is fine the view is spectacular. Guests from most overseas countries please remember- We drive on the wrong side of the road- its easy to forget when you start out driving each day!

Once you drive onto the bridge I suggest you move into lane 2, which is clearly marked (the second from the left hand side). Whoever is passenger will get the opportunity to see the upper reaches of the harbour but the opera house is only seen from the eastern side of the bridge.

Exit the bridge from lane 2 and simply follow the signs to the Pacific Highway. (Highway 1) then follow the highway and you will pass through the suburbs of North Sydney, Crows Nest, St. Leonards and by the time you get to Chatswood you will have noticed your starting to see more trees as you are entering the leafy suburbs of Sydney.

Proceed on the highway through the suburbs of Roseville, Lindfield, Gordon, Pymble, Turramurra and when at Wahroonga look out for the right turn onto the expressway north to Newcastle. This turn onto the Newcastle expressway is located at a major set of traffic lights - you can't miss it - you turn onto the expressway and can say goodbye to Sydney. The expressway is coloured blue on a NRMA map.

Initially you'll see rugged sandstone gorge country-these are eastern spurs of the "blue mountains”. You will cross the Hawkesbury River that starts as the Nepean River in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. It will take about one and a half to one and three quarter hours to reach the end of the expressway and you stay on it to the end then follow the Pacific Highway (and Taree) signs.

You will exit the expressway via a round-a-bout just past a fuel stop on your left and then keep in the centre lane onto an overpass that swings to the right. Proceed along this till you see a large concrete bridge that crosses the Hunter River. (At Hexham)

Locate your car in the left hand lane and go up and over the bridge to cross the hunter river. Proceed along the pacific highway through Raymond Terrace and simply head north. Towards Bulahdelah and Port Macquarie.

A suggested thing to do

We would suggest look at the NRMA map and take the "lakes way" turn off and travel through Forster as part of the experience of the Great Pacific Drive. You will have an opportunity to see some great aboriginal art at " Towamba" the aboriginal art at Forster; it's excellent. It's also more scenic. You will re-enter the Pacific Highway north of Nabiac and continue up the highway to Kew where you will have the option of taking the coastal route via Lighthouse Beach and Port Macquarie. You will have the chance to see koalas in their natural tree environment and a visit to Kingfisher Park is worthwhile. You will rejoin the Pacific Highway north of Wauchope.

We then give you further alternatives - all are clearly shown on your NRMA map.

1. Stay on the highway or detour to Trial Bay Gaol (ruins) & South West Rocks which is a domestic vacation town and then rejoin the highway about 20 kms north of Kempsey.

2. Near Urunga you may consider going about 12kms west to Bellingen and then to the Dorrigo national parks & wildlife treetop walkway- the treetop walk is spectacular and Bellingen is a beautiful little village with lots of local arts and craft shops. The drive up the Bellingen valley is very picturesque.

3.Coffs Harbour is the states largest banana growing area and if you have time the "Big Banana" is worth a look.

4.between Coffs Harbour and Grafton you will pass one of the Teatree oil plantations, which have been established in this region- the trees are pruned into little hedges - the leaves are picked each year and the Teatree oil extracted from the leaves.

5.about 35 kms (22 miles) north of Grafton you will see the ferryboat tourist information centre on your left - they make a nice cup of coffee and have some interesting local art works at very reasonable prices. This is on the Clarence River, which is the largest river on the eastern coastline of Australia, and it's only a short drive through the village of MacLean to the seaside township of Yamba. We strongly suggest you do visit Yamba - drive right thru the village and up to the pub "hotel" on the headland of the river mouth. You will now understand why we call it "the great pacific drive" this is a spectacular view of the coastline both north and south.

The Clarence the largest eastern flowing river from the Great Dividing Range (a low range of mountains, which run north from Victoria to Queensland. Large quantities of prawns (shrimp) are netted from the river and the sugar mill at Harwood (you will see it) on the riverbank is Australia’s southern-most sugar refinery.

The next 50kms you will travel through coastal heath with the Bundalong National Park on the eastern side of the road. Take care driving this section of the highway, kangaroos may try to cross in front of you and they come out of the bush so quickly - accidents do occur.

105kms (62 miles) north of Grafton you will come to the village of Broadwater on the Richmond River and will pass the Broadwater Sugar Mill on your left.

For the next 8 kms (5 miles) you will drive along the eastern riverbank of the Richmond River and you will then cross this river at Wardell.

400 yards past the bridge you will come to a turn off on the left hand side of the highway. This turnoff is signposted " tourist route 28 ---- turn off the highway here to get to Hume's Hovell,

450 yards along this road you have to turn right to continue on the route 28 towards Hume's Hovell, proceed 8.5 kms (5.25 miles) along this road to the top of the hill where you will come to Dalwood Road turning left - this is signposted " Victoria Park Nature Reserve / Lismore " and on the left hand side of the road is a blue / white sign to Hume's Hovell - it's not actually a hovel-

Proceed 3 kms ( 2 miles ) up this road and you are at our front gate. - We look forward to your company.

You will pass a castle type tourist facility [this is called Macadamia Land] on the right hand side of the highway. DETAILED DIRECTIONS SOUTH FROM BRISBANE

We hope these directions will help make travelling as easy as possible. we supply this text to assist you in your travelling to Hume's Hovell - have a pleasant drive, which without stops will take 3 hours easy driving, how long it takes you will depend on how many places you stop to see.

Some 60 to 65kms (35/40miles) south after crossing the Brisbane river you will pass " Dream World" on the left and then MGM Movie World on the right - either of these may be a great stop but if you have been to Disneyland or the film studios at home, You will find that The Currumbin Bird Sanctuary "will provide you with a real Aussie experience ".

Just south of Movie World stay on the Pacific Highway i.e. stay in the centre lane and proceed towards Nerang. - Don’t turn off to the left on the Gold Coast Highway. 27kms south of Nerang you will come to a major intersection with traffic lights - you can-

A. Turn left at these lights and head about 1.5 kms (about one mile) north. You will see on the right hand side of the road is the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary it's very good. Koalas up trees/kangaroos you can hand feed and lots of spectacular Australian parrots fly freely through the trees - they may even land on your head if you visit here.  You then return south, proceed straight through the traffic lights; past Coolangatta airport and get into the left hand lanes to turn to Kirra beach and Coolangatta.

B. Turn right at these lights and proceed past Coolangatta airport- you should keep to the left hand lanes once past the airport so you may turn left to Kirra & Coolangatta beaches Kirra and Coolangatta beaches are the southern end of what is called the "Gold Coast" as you drive round the headlands the passenger can look back and decide if you want to stop.

After you have looked at either a or b and have rounded the headland from Kirra turn left and drive along the Coolangatta beach foreshore. At the end of the beach turn left to see rainbow beach and the tweed river entrance or right and then left to go to the top of the hill & captain cook memorial lookout. Return to rejoin the highway at the twin towns services club (at the NSW/QLD state border) and continue your journey south. After you cross the Tweed River (over a big new bridge) you will continue south along the eastern side of the river for 20 to 25 kms and you will then come to a sugar mill at Condong.

5 kms further south you will come to a major round-a-bout to cross the river at Murwillumbah. You can see the tweed regional art gallery on the other side of the river - on the riverbank -

We would suggest the art gallery is definitely worth a visit if you like good portrait paintings: it's the home of the Moran National Portraiture Prize. Return back over the river and continue south towards Ballina / Sydney.

As you drive south (about 20 to 30 minutes south of Murwillumbah) you have another choice to make

A. - Turn left to see Byron Bay or

B. - Continue south along the pacific highway.

We would suggest a detour into Byron Bay and see "The Pass”: the lighthouse; and Wattegos beach - all on the way to the lighthouse and Australia’s most easterly point. Right now whales are travelling down up the coast - the Byron Bay lighthouse is also a great spot to spend a little time whale watching

Wattegos beach, just under the lighthouse has some of the most expensive real estate on the coast. The Byron area has an artistic community with all social classes from hippie to film stars.

South of Byron on the coast road to Lennox you will come to the Broken Head turnoff on your left - its a beaut little beach and the national parks nature reserve is interesting. In a width of under 1km (about 800 yards) the vegetation changes from rainforest to sea sprayed scrub.

Return back to the coast road south.

You will pass Lennox Headland (a world renown board riders spot) and some other pristine beaches till you get to the turnoff to Shelly’s beach. We would again suggest you turn in to the left here if you have the time. Drive along Shelly’s and at the end of the beach is a car park with a great little cafe at the end of the car park. If you have a "cuppa" here you will probably see porpoises in the surf off the rocks just below where you’re sitting.

The people who run the cafe are very friendly and will direct you back to the coast road and over the Missingham Bridge towards Ballina. Go straight through the round-a-bout and just past the pool is the tourist info centre. Behind the info centre is a maritime museum, which houses a raft, which a mad group of Chileans floated on the ocean currents from Chile to Australia. - Again well worth a look

If you have managed to see all the places detailed you will by now probably suffering from tourism overload so we would suggest you then head for Hume's Hovell.

Proceed south: directly through the Ballina shopping area and then 7 kms ( about 5 miles ) south of Ballina turn right to Alstonville. This turnoff is onto the Bruxner Highway.

7 kms along the Bruxner Highway (up the hill) you enter the village of Alstonville - again go straight through the round-a-bout, (it's only a little one) 100 yards turn left into Wardell Road. [signposted tourist route 28]

5.5 kms down Wardell Road you will come to Dalwood Road on your right - turn up Dalwood Road and proceed for another 3 kms and you're at the front gate to Hume's Hovell and we guarantee you a great Aussie Welcome!
