Your Hosts - Suzanne and Peter Hume.

Arrive as a guest and leave as a friend !

From high-school days in the leafy northern Sydney suburbs Peter courted Suzanne and they married at St James Church Turramurra in 1966 and decided to "go bush" in 1970 after selling a wool exporting business and purchased adjoining dairy farms at Nimbin in Northern Coastal New South Wales.

The first ten years of country life produced Katrina and Tim ; it must have been the clean country air. Over the last 30 years Suzanne and Peter have changed from city slickers to country folk and can recount a myriad of country living disasters and successes. They first attempted dairying and found this not their forte- the first months cheque from NORCO amounted to AUD$11.52.

Undaunted they transferred their efforts to beef cattle and the world cattle market collapsed so small-crops became the next direction for their endeavours. A crop of Zucchini produced a net return of AUD$2.39 from the Banana Growers Federation and they still have the Rural Bank cheque - so much work for so little.

Tomato growing was more successful till a series of hot dry days ripened the crop and picking started 2 days before Christmas. The last fruit and vegetable train had been fully booked and in their usual enterprising, undaunted way they drove to the Tweed Heads Shopping Centre and set up selling boxes off the back of their truck. The fruiterer in the shopping centre was horrified and immediately bought the truckload. What a great Christmas!

Then there was the experience cooking 13,000 Banana Fritters over the 8 days of the Hippy Aquarius Festival in 1973 ( this was Australia's answer to Woodstock). Another great tale is the story of the fun of picking grapes at Stanthorpe to make wine and Grappa with a neighbour . This tale couples to the story of the local police officers investigation which left all involved very drunk.

The Nimbin Hippy environment and Peter's political movement from slightly leftist to a position to the right of Gungas Kahn. "If we had wanted to go to the Pub we couldn't because we had no money. Not that it made any difference as we couldn't get into the Pub for all the hippies living on social security payments."

The move to near the coast at Alstonville and starting an old fashioned country style general store : the establishment of their Macadamia Plantation in 1987 and the collapse of the company who had purchased their first two years crop: two years work and 2 cents in the dollar payment. - Oh the joy of farming. - The highlight of winning The Peninsula Group Trophy ( which they have retained ) for producing the regions highest quality Macadamias. Suzanne's prompting of Peter into market their own crop under the label of Duck Creek Mountain Bush Nutz.

The setting up of Hume's Hovell Fine Bed and Breakfast almost five years ago and, the fun both Peter and Suzanne have entertaining guests, have made for Australia's first & premier bed & breakfast located on a commercial Macadamia Plantation.
